Jim Corbett National Park one of the oldest and first national park in India, is situated in Nainital & Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand state of Northern India. The Corbett National Park was setup as the Hailey National Park in year 1936 for the safeguard of the endangered Bengal Tiger to protect and was renamed a Ramganga in the mid 1950. Corbett park is spread in the area of 520 square kilometres comprising of hills, river belts, grasslands, and a big lake. Days here in Jim Corbett are sunny while nights are cold. This park has dense moist deciduous forest of sal, peepal, rohini, haldu, birch, spruce, bamboo, and mango trees. There are over 110 species of trees, 50 species of mammals, 580 species of birds, and 25 species of reptiles. In early 1900, there were several Britishers like E.R. Stevans and E.A. Smythies who recommended to establish a national park here and the administration considered the probability of setting up a reserve in 1907. And then a Hailey National Park named reserve under the area of 323 square kilometres was established in 1936 after the Sir Malcolm Hailey, the Governor of United Provinces. This was when first national park of Asia came into its existence. The administration prohibited hunting here in the park and the timber wood was only to be used for domestic purpose. And slowly after sometime these was a ban too on killing or capturing of reptiles, mammals, and birds under its boundaries. Corbett was selected as location for the Project Tiger in 1974.
Everything was going well until the second world war when ruthless poaching and timber cutting begin. Then later on the area of the reserve was enhanced and 798km2 was added to it in 1991 as a buffer zone that included Kalagarh division of Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary.
Corbett National Park falls under the thirteen areas of World Wide Fund for Nature under Terai Arc Landscape Program, a program meant to preserve the tiger, Asian elephant, and one-horned rhinoceros species of the five terrestrial flagship species.
Jim Corbett or James Edward Corbett was an army official of the British-Indian Army and was also a great wildlife lover, conservationist and an author. Due to what he did as a nature activist, the Hailey National Park was renamed as the Jim Corbett National Park. Jim Corbett was an Indian who was born in Nainital to his parents Christopher William Corbett and Mary Jane. He has a great interest and love for wildlife right from his childhood, and so he became a great hunter and tracker. There were several chances when government summoned him for his help in tracking and hunting the man-eater tiger and leopard. Even after being so polished hunter Edward didn’t kill any animal except those man-eaters.
Jim Corbett started a movement for the conservation of wildlife and forests and supported All-India Conference for the Preservation of Wildlife and encouraged the establishment of the Association for the Preservation of Game in the United Provinces. The park was renamed to the Jim Corbett National Park after the India’s independence in 1957 in the honor of the renowned Jim Corbett. Jim Corbett and his sister left for Kenya after the India’s independence in November 1947 selling their Kumaon home which was converted to Jim Corbett Museum. This is one of the major tourist attractions near the Jim Corbett National Park. In the honor of this legendary hunter cum wildlife conservationist, one of the five lingering tiger subspecies was named Panthera Tigris Corbetti.

Jeep Safari in the Corbett National Park is the most common mode to travel. One can rent out Jeeps for park trips from Office of Jim Corbett National Park Director or from the Park Safari Gates.
There are six safari zones in Jim Corbett named Dhikala, Bijrani, Dhela, Jhirna and Durgadevi. There is forest rest house, in almost all zones and some were built hundreds of years ago.
Tourists are restricted to walk in Jim Corbett National Park, but can around park boundary with a guide. Walking Tours can be made in buffer zone of Jim Corbett and is very worthwhile & good for your health as Jim Corbett adjacent is lush, green, and rich in birds and flora and plant diversity.
It is at a close distance from the national park. Corbett Museum is a legacy bungalow that was a home to Jim Corbett. It has belongings of Jim Corbett, like a few personal letters written by him & his friends and family, some paintings, sketches, photographs, and his entire last hunt, are on display.
